Before we can begin a workout program let's see what your body can handle.
Get in shape, loose weight, increase activity, get fit or change your lifestyle for better health and wellness. whatever your idea may be start here!!!!!!!!!!
WE WILL ASSESS YOUR MOVEMENT PATTERNS AND DIRECT SPECIFIC EXERCISE ROUTINE TO PREPARE YOUR BODY FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE.
The Functional Movement Approach
Functional Movement Systems is designed to interpret human movement patterns through the FMS and SFMA procedures. The goal is identify movement dysfunctions and correct through a series of exercise and/or stretching procedures. The treatment direction is client specific and dependent on the outcomes of each individual’s screening. Below is a general guide to the treatment process.
1. The first is to separate into 2 categories: Pain or Painless
Painless is then directed into the FMS screen procedure to determine the clients ability to perform activities.
Painful individuals proceed to the SFMA testing to breakdown and treat the pain prior to establishing a baseline for their movement dysfunction.
2. Once the initial testing is complete a treatment direction is then established as follows:
If pain is present, treat the pain to minimize the impact on movement.
Identify any asymmetrical patterns and treat with increasing mobility
Increase motor control (stability) of the increased mobility gains.
3. Other Directions in treatment:
It may be required to remove some or all of clients current exercises
It may be required to stop current activities (up to 2 weeks) to prevent further dysfunction until better patterns are developed.
In the end, correctional exercises should not be a normal event once mobility and motor control are established …..PROPER ACTIVITY SHOULD…..
The Functional Movement Screen
“We are generations away from lifestyles and a proper movement base that can handle an increase in activity load” Gray Cook. With this said, the current movement is to get fit, loose weight and be active. Maybe this statement is the reason why the process of getting fit is causing issues that cause you to stop and revert to old ways.
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a 10 minute screen and is comprised of 7 movements and is not a medical diagnostic test. It is strictly used as a guide/tool to make a person aware of movement dysfunctions and how current/future activities could lead to an increase chance of injury or a decreased performance. Again this is not a diagnostic tool used for treatment of ailments. The results of the screen can only be used as a general guideline for future exercise/activity limits and outcomes.
The FMS is used to assess functional movement patterns while a patient is PAIN FREE. If you are experiencing pain at this time the screen cannot be performed and it is recommended that you seek the advice of a health care professional for a complete evaluation of your pain. With the movement systems approach another set of tests, Selective Functional Movement Assessment, will further evaluate and treat painful areas.
The FMS is designed as a way to determine how your body is participating in basic fundamental movement patterns. Fundamental movements are not sports specific, they are human specific and are the foundation for proper functional human movement. When these fundamental movement patterns are altered/dysfunctional the body is more prone to injury and overall maximal performance is decreased.
This screen is designed as a tool to assess a person’s ability to exercise and gives insight into the chances of activity related injury. It is used on normal, fit and pain free individuals who wish to exercise or increase activities for a health benefit. It focuses on movement patterns, flexibility and motor control (stability).
It is also important to know that exercise alone cannot correct or help a person if other bad lifestyle choices are in the way, ie…. Posture, diet, etc.
Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) Information
“We are generations away from lifestyles and a proper movement base that can handle an increase in activity load” Gray Cook. Basically this means that our goal of losing weight, being fit, or getting active needs to shift toward preparing our bodies and retraining our innate movement patterns to allow us to proceed with activity. Without that thought, our bodies will react to increase activity with pain and soreness that exceeds the normal post activity muscle aches.
The SFMA uses a breakdown system to determine a movement pattern distortion that leads to a diagnosis and treatment direction. It is very directional and starts with the neck/upper body and proceeds to lower body and total body movements.
The SFMA is started with a series of “Top Tier” tests that are assessed based on pain and function. Any dysfunctional movements in the top tier tests are further broken down by a series of more specific movement and stability tests. This determines the local areas to be addressed. Pain will always be addressed first followed by mobility and then stabilization. The top tier tests are also used as an at home self monitoring tool to follow your progress. These test lead us in a treatment direction that is unique to each individual.
The treatment/rehab program is to correct dysfunctional movement patterns to allow more efficient human movement. Once pain is removed the object is to increase mobility and prescribe specific exercises or remove current exercises (temporarily) to increase the bodies motor control of the targeted patterns. This is not strengthening, it is increasing the bodies awareness and control of movement.
The total goal is to restore proper basic fundamental movements to the human body. Fundamental movements are not sports specific, they are human specific and are the foundation for proper functional human movement. When these fundamental movement patterns are altered/dysfunctional the body is more prone to injury and overall maximal performance is decreased.
